School Council

All school councils in Victoria operate under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. Each school council is established by an Order of the Minister for Education, which specifies membership, size and configuration, objectives and powers, functions and accountabilities and role of the executive officer who is the principal. The school council has particular functions in setting and monitoring the school’s direction.

School councils have three main responsibilities:

Finance: overseeing the development of the school’s annual budget and ensuring proper records are kept of the school’s financial operation

Strategic planning: participating in the development and monitoring of the school strategic plan

Policy development and review: developing, reviewing and updating policies that reflect a school’s values and support the school’s broad direction outlined in its strategic plan.

Other key functions of school councils include:

  • raising funds for school related purposes
  • maintaining school grounds and facilities
  • entering into contracts
  • reporting annually to the school community and the Department
  • creating interest in the school in the wider community
  • representing and taking the views of the community into account
  • regulating and facilitating after-hours use of school premises and grounds
  • operating a children’s service at the school

Parents & Friends Associations promote the welfare of, and provide support to, the school and its community. Parents are key partners in their child’s learning. By interacting with the school and other parents, Parents & Friends Associations members can use their skills and experience to work collaboratively with others in supporting the school and its students and build a sense of community within the school.

The role of a parents’ club is threefold:

  • to provide support, in various forms, for the school, its students and community, including raising funds for the benefit of the school
  • to work in cooperation with the principal, staff, and school council in building effective partnerships between home and school
  • to encourage diversity by getting to know the parents of other children at the school, and to support the operation of the school.

The Parents and Friends Association (PFA) at Grasmere are an active group of parents united with the one goal of actively assisting our children and school in any way we can.  The PFA meet once a month to discuss fundraising opportunities and special events for students.

Regular activities include:

  • PFA run the canteen, BBQ, and coffee at the athletics day in Term 1, this is a fantastic fun day and a great opportunity to meet your child’s new school friends and teachers.
  • Mothers/Father’s Day gift stalls
  • Special Event Last day of term lunch options for students e.g., BBQ, hot dogs, hot chocolates, and donut days.
  • BBQs for a variety of functions throughout the year
  • Grandparents/Special Friends Day
  • Parent & Family nights
  • Support Santa in delivering goodies & a Christmas Raffle

Funds raised are donated back to the school in an area of need that has been identified by Staff & School Council.

We welcome anyone in our school community to get involved with the PFA.  It’s such a great opportunity to meet new people, support one another and make a positive difference to our children’s school environment and education.

Each new family to the school will receive a detailed “Information” booklet on the PFA.
